Default T-Case not engaging

So here is the problem. I have a 2001 1500 with an NP 231 D transfer case. Recently while in 4H it started making noise like it was slipping. It is now very hard to shift between any positions (4H, 2H, N, 4L). Once I do get it to go into 4H, it continues to make noise like it is slipping.

Any ideas? This was a sudden change in operation. I have checked all of the vacuum lines and they are ok. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Drop the rear driveshaft, and remove the tailshaft housing. Check and see if the snap ring holding the shaft/rear bearing in place is still there. (my guess is, it isn't.)

If the snap ring is missing wouldnt he also be having a problem with just everyday driving? Maybe fluid in the t-case needs checked and the actual linkage to shift the transfer case should be checked to make sure there is no binding

Not necessarily. When mine broke it made some grinding noises sometimes, but drove fine. Thankfully i figured it out and replaced it before any real damage occurred.

I got ya. I know when my t-case was going out it was the bearings on the front where it meets up with the transmisson and everything went downhill from there and destroyed the whole thing. Check your snap ring and if all that checks out you might have to drop the case and take a looky loo on the inside to see whats up. I had multiple failures in mine causing a number of problems all with the internals of the case.

Sounds like the snap ring to me too.

Chain slippage was one of the symptoms that led me to the snap ring, easy to check. Dont drive it again until you have checked.

Default t case slipping

I have not engaged my 4 wheel drive in over a year. I went to engage it yesterday and I got a grinding sound out of the t case. I have only drove the truck 3000 miles since last time it was engaged and it work perfect on icy road. Any suggestions where I should start looking first. Mine is a 2004 ram 2500 HD with a 6 inch lift and a hemi. Please help Dodge wants 1200 for inspection and repair. thanks

Post in the third gen section. Your truck is too new for the folks here.

If they are quoting 1200 bucks, what are they gonna do for that 1200 bucks?
