Just stay on top of your fluid change intervals.

Yep, ATF+4 and nothing but. Some shops will refill with ATF3 plus an additive, but I just don't trust it. I have no particular reason to suspect that it's insufficient, I just do.

Don't you mean dexron III plus an additive? +3 is no longer available.

According to my carfax on my 5.9 the previous owner did a transmission flush at around 60k miles. Thats the first and only time he ever changed the fluid, i bought it with 118k on it and my first order of buisness was changing the filter and fluid. You can go longer on fluid changes if you keep your transmission cool. Altho i still have problems with the damn thing shuddering when it shifts from 3rd to overdrive... I have yet to figure it out.. altho i havent gotten around to having the solenoids changed.. i suspect its that which is doing it. Sometimes maybe 3 days of the month my transmission doesnt shudder when it shifts it just shifts smoothly.. Then if i turn the Jeep off itll start it all over again.. so i dunno.. I have put almost 10k on it 14 months of driving and it hasnt gotten worse

The hotter the transmission runs the faster the fluid breaksdown.
