That's an idea. Got a few ideas i'm considering.

Not sure if I really need it to swivel or move out of the way though. If I have something that needs to go in the bed that will interfere with the rack, the main thing I would want is to just remove the rack entirely. So I may focus my efforts (and money) on a quick disconnect system instead of a pivoting/hinge/track system.

Ya, both Thule and Yakima make racks systems that would work, but it will run upwards of $400-$500 for the parts. I think I could build a stronger crossrail that would work better for what I am wanting (quick disconnects, locking) for cheaper I hope. Will have to price out some parts first. More to come as I progress.

IMHO, that truck is too nice looking the way it is. No matter how good of a job you do. I'd stick a 33 on the spare, and get AAA.

Just an idea, What about a set of folding legs at each corner, then you could say raise it to cab height. Legs would be something like you see on pop up campers.

I appreciate that, but my truck basically sees only off-road and winter/snow use now that it isn't my DD anymore. So I need to do some stuff to it that will make it more usuable for me the way I am using it these days. This is one of the things I need to do.

My truck has looked like it does today for a few years now. Time for a transformation. I have several other projects along this same line, but this is the one I decided to do first.

Ya, I guess instead of removing it, I could have it so it lifts up high enough. The Thule Xsporter System basically does what you are suggesting, and it is a good idea. However, the Thule system cost over $500. It also won't work with my bed cover that is on there. I'm going to custom build something so that I can keep the bed cover. That idea also won't work for times I want to haul rock and stuff that has to be dumped into the bed.

Actually, the Thule rack I am talking about is the one that Wh1t3NuKle looks like he has on his truck. Got any other pics Wh1t3NuKle? I'm not going to use that rack, but pics in this thread would probably be good since it is so related.

(These are recent pics. I'll get better ones due to low lighting. These pics were me showing Thule their new bike mount does not work. So, PM exactly what kind of shots you want.)

You ask too nicely.

I think that looks good, but see how it goes inside the bed for support. Makes for a solid mount I'm sure, but the is the reason I wouldn't still be able to use my bed cover. I also think it sticks up too tall for what I am wanting to do. If you look back at the Toyota I posted in my first post of this thread, that is more what I am wanting. Low profile.

Thanks for posting those.

I got no qualms about the height and such that you are looking for. If I could lower mine a bit, I surely would. The height is just enough for when stepping over...I'm about caught.

For sure this would not work with your cover and hence I would not have recommended it. Is your cover one of those folding ones or a one piece deck that lifts? Sorry if I missed that.
