Default Single Magnaflow Muffler Help?

My '97 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 is all stock and i wanted to do some stuff to it to make it sounds loud in a good way and gain some power.

I was going to go with a several hundred dollar exhaust setup but i was talking to a guy in at work here recently.

His dad and himself own a shop and they have a magnaflow 1 in, 1 out muffler laying around that he would say he would give me for 30 bucks.

We got to talking and he said he could put me an exhaust on. He said for 150 dollars including labor, he will put on the 1 in, 1 out magnaflow muffler and split it with a y pipe for duals with 2.5 inch pipe. He said he would also put some tips on it.

Is this a good deal and what will i expect? He told me it would be a good and loud sound but i just thought i would get you guys' opinions off here.

Secondly, for 100 bucks including labor he told me he could convert my intake into a Short Ram and put a cone filter on. He said it will mostly be the sounds of an intake system and maybe a little top end.

Any thoughts/comments?

-Thanks!

As long as he changes the factory y pipe after the manifolds it sounds good to me. also, the sooner the split into 2 the better.

The factory y pipe is very restrictive, and is one thing that needs attention on all magnum dodges.

Its a single in, single out muffler. I think the Y he's talking about is after the muffler, not before the cat. Anyway, it'll probably sound ok, you'll probably like it. The dual tips will be for looks only, pretty much. I wouldn't expect a big mileage or performance increase with either mod, but the exhaust sound might make it a little more fun to drive. I think I'd prefer a drop in K and N or Spectre over the custom intake, myself.

I don't think the Magnaflows are real "loud", more of the deeper rumble. But then I could be wrong seeing as though I have a Flowmaster.

Ask him if the bend on the exhaust pipe would be mandrel bends or crimp bends. As for the "short ram intake" I'd need to know exactly what he was intending to do before I could say yes or no to it? You could ask him what brand of filter he'd use.

What size are the inlets and outlets on the muffler?

If the guy has a decent pipe bender I'd spend the money to have him replace the stock y and put a high flow cat on it, it's going to cost more but be worth it.

I'd say no on the intake, you can get everything from Autozone you need for $60 to do a 14x3 round filter and I promise you his isn't any better.

The stock "y pipe" the guys keep refering to is right after the exhaust manifolds and before the muffler. Mine is one big piece and has the catalytic converter attached to it. Hope that clears that up for ya.

Yeah the y pipe is after the muffler to split it into duals as far as i know. I would get a flowmaster but i came across this deal really inexpensive.

And yeah, i didnt expect too much power or mileage gains, i just wanted to have a good loud sound coming from the truck.

And the inlets and outlets are 2.5 inches im pretty sure.

About the filter, he just said he will convert the stock intake into a short ram intake and put a cone filter on. I never heard of something like it but he said it will mainly be the sound of an intake and maybe a little top end power increase. But whats the drop in K@N filter cost? Before any of this came up, i was going to get a volant but it was too expensive.

Thats not the y-pipe they are refering to! HAHA

From front to back

Motor-exhaust manifolds-"Y PIPE"-cat-muffler-tailpipe setup

Thats the stock y pipe that is restrictive. This is what the guys are trying to tell you would be a good thing to replace if you want a little more power with an exhaust.

I hope that clarifies a little better.
