Default dodge ram 2500 needs work did i get good deal

Ok i bought for $780 a 1997 2500 single cab 4wd with 175k miles on it needs front tires and he says the freeze out plug needs replacing and there is a slight motor tap. did i get a good deal i want to fix it up and re sell it. what i am afraid of is when i replace the freeze out plug there will be more compression and that tap will be a rumble!

Freeze plugs will not have anything to do with compression, and will not cause tapping. Freeze plugs are to prevent block from cracking if water freezes in engine.

You probably got a good deal, but I would start a project list of things that may need to be done to it.

Uh sounds a little risky with the freeze plug and engine noise, but it looks like a decent truck, and you could always just part it out and scrap it to get your money back out of it. Good luck!

Or just part it out and make your money back plus some.

worse comes to worse you could put a good used motor in it and still be out ahead, fix the freeze plug, start it up and go if the motor blows its worth it to put another motor in it

Theoretically freeze plugs were to prevent the block from cracking if the coolant froze, in actual practice, it doesn't make any difference. I think the real purpose was to plug the holes necessary to remove the material used in the casting process.

Sounds like a good deal to me. I'll give you your money back on it if you live close. It would probably bring around 600 in scrap alone around here.

Looks like a good deal to me. Especially if it currently runs and drives. I've got a weak motor in mine too and I paid a little more than twice that.
