This is what i found when i took the pan off after the truck was acting really weird on the way home.

I have talked to a couple mechanics and they say that i should just throw the trans out and get a new one.

Well i'm broke cant afford ad pro rebuild, but i am ambitious and very mechanical and have lots of time on my hands.

If i were to take the trans apart and clean out every inch of it and replace what needed to be replaced, obviously torque converter, bands and clutches do you think it would be worth my time and energy.

She is my baby and if i cant fix it for cheap ( not paying for labour cheap) then i can keep her, but if its gonna be expensive i might as well scrap her.

Well, the scrap guys don't care if its assembled or not.... so, since you have the time, yank the trans, tear it down, see what ya got. There is a parts list on page 6 of MonteC's trans corner in the FAQ section, go by that, you can rebuild it for a few hundred bucks, plus whatever hard parts you need to replace. Price it out, take it from there.

 

Definitely tear it down and see what the cost would be. I have no experience with transmissions until mine blew. I rebuilt it and now it's solid. I researched it for about 2 months and finally had the testicular fortitude to do it. It cost me $650 in parts to do it including the sonnax sure cure kit for the valve body. DO IT!

 

I'm gonna have to be another one to say give it a try yourself. I was told mine needed a complete rebuild too, so I started searching, found this sight and the ever helpfull FSM. I probably could have been good at about $200, but I threw some upgrades at it as well.

+1 on what Faithful and Newman said. I had the same experience. Some mechanical aptitude, and lots of help from manual and DF members.

Just keep everything clean, and be careful woth th OD unit - spring carries about 800 pounds of force (good excuse to buy that hydraulic press you always wanted!) or could get someone to press it apart and back together pretty cheap.

 

Yeah, I think I read the ATSG manuel for that tranny 4-5 times a week for 2 months in order to know it inside out.

 

Well the worse thing that can happen is you cant put it back together leaving you with a dead transmission that was already dead....

I dont have the tools to take a transmission off so i couldnt do something like that, but if i did i would try it if i had no other option because like you im dirt poor, and when things broke on my engine recently like the timing cover gasket, and waterpump and the viscous coupler in my transfercase i couldnt afford what the shops wanted (thousands (1,100 for the tc, and $600 for the timing cover and waterpump stuff)... Well i took a deep breath and pulled my $20 toolbox out and fixed all of it for around $460 (the big thing was mainly the viscous coupler which was $310 by itself)

Before i did this the most mechanical experience i had was changing oil.

 

What sort of upgrades would you all recommend I do while I have it all apart?
