Default Gears

How much $$$ would I be looking to spend to re-gear my rear and front axles? Reason is because the 3.56's are too high for pulling a good load. It's a 5 speed, have to really feather/slip the clutch when taking off. Would I have to get the computer re programed for the new gears? I didn't think so because of it being a 5 speed.

Any info would help

Put your truck info in your sig, so we know what ya got. If you post from a cell phone, put it in your profile as well. (sigs don't show up in posts from phones.)

What year is your truck? What size tires? Any other mods? Fixed the plenum yet?

It's a 97 half ton 318, 4x4. Planning on doing the kegger when I get the time. It's going to get 3 inch lift and 33 12.50s or 13.50s. Getting a chip in the next couple weeks. It's got 285-75-16s on it now

Ok, the 285's are basically 33" tires in any event. To get back closer to 'stock' power levels, 4.10s are what is suggested. (and of course, fix the plenum..... and make sure it runs as it should.) You are prolly lookin' at around 1500 parts and labor to do do front and rear. Plus another 20 to 50 bucks to correct the speedometer. Given that you are looking at some heavy tires though... and tow..... I would seriously consider going to 4.56 gears...... better bottom end grunt to get everything moving. (MUCH better for towing.)

I got a figure from a local 4x4 shop and he told me it would be about 600 bucks for each axle.. So I would have spent about $1200 total if I hadnt completely destroyed the rear axle. Just make some calls to a 4x4 shop near you and ask them and find the best price. If you have the right tools and know what you are doing you could do the switch for ALOT less money. Thats if you know what you are doing.

Edit: I agree with Heyyou.. 4.56's would be the best combo for you..
