A few months ago when I finally found a stretch of mostly level highway and a 65MPH speed limit, with no wind to interfere, I logged 15.9+MPG (15.96, I believe it was) over a tad more than 140 miles. I figure our rolling weight at that point was at least 6300 pounds -- unladen with a half tank and the wife and I on board (and all of my usual stuff in the toolbox) the tare is 5940. We had about 400 pounds of cargo and started into that stretch with a full tank. If it hadn't been for some traffic slowing/stopping I would have broke 16MPG.

Not that I can do that with mixed driving. And not that I routinely see level highway, windless conditions, or interstates that run that slow. It was fun seeing that number on the calculator, just the same. I showed it to the wife and used it as my excuse for continued spending on the truck.

It had 35's on it with the 3.55 gears when I got it. Man, what a dog it was. After the gear swap it was like a whole new truck.

Most people can't figure out what engine is in my rig. Some people think its diesel while idling and then get confused as I drive away. I made a straight pipe exhaust with dual cats and an x-pipe. I really need to get a muffler on it. It's just too damn loud while driving on the highway.

you probably also have a 5.9L my work truck is a 2007 dodge 5500 quad cab with a 15ft flat bed with tool boxes and welder and fuel tank on it.. has the 6.7... my 360 gets better mpg lol...

my work bought all these newer diesel thinking they would save them money on fuel over the 5-10 yr old diesel we had... and none of them get close to what my old work truck had it was 2001 dodge 3500 4x4 cummins with a 6 speed... i would pull a hydro blaster they weight about 12k down the freeway and still get a nice 16 mpg.. i tow with this new one and i start seeing single digits when i fill it up at night

I enjoy having an 8800 GVWR truck that weighs in at 5200 lbs. I have the lightest possible combination of options, with a v8, manual, reg cab long bed, leaving lots of capacity to haul with. So thats one perspective that no one has brought up yet. Now don't get me wrong, i'd toss her to the side for a cummins in a heartbeat, but that's not thinking in the real world for me I get 13.7 mpg consistently with my oil-spewing 5.9 magnum, but keep in mind thats with 33's on 3.55's, which suck. hopefully that will see improvement with gear upgrade, or smaller tires.
