Default 488ci vs 360ci vs Diesel

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know the advantages to having either of these three motors? Im thinking about a 2001 model years for each? what kind of hp/trq? i think the 360 has more hp but less trq then the diesel, and the 488 has more hp and trq then the 360 (obviously), and the 488 has more hp then the diesel but less trq, but is it substantially less?
just curious

(On a different note, how do you add the signature? that shows your vehicle info? do you have to type it in everytime or can it be done automatically)

Click User CP in the upper left hand corner, look for Edit Signature.

No clue bout the motor's. What's the intended use? Pulling or just to have a crap load of HP and Torque. If ya wanna pull anything heavy or frequently, go diesel.

If you just want loads of HP, don't go diesel. Unless you plan on moding it out.

I can't speak too much about diesels, never owned one, but from what I understand the biggest draw back to a diesel is the initial price. I personally would take the 5.9L (360) over the 8.0L (488) just because it's cheaper to maintain (less oil, fewer spark plugs, ect) and better on fuel. For the most part a 360 can handle whatever you put behind it from my experience. But like the others before me said, it depends alot on how you plan to use it.

Well the biggest difference in HP is the V10 and the 360 is on the short end of the torque stick.

Even with the V10 having comparable torque number's to the diesel, the diesel should provide better fuel economy.

You can beef up the 360 HP and Torque, but you'll probably get as bad or worse mileage then the V10.

Just depends on your application needs.

Thanks for the numbers, it was jus purely curiosity. I do like the sound of having a V10 though

Yea but I'm only getting about 10mpg, maybe if I'm going down hill in neutral, a V10 can't be much worse

I tow a good amount with my V10 and I do like the way it pulls. Torque comes on very low on the RPMs (400lbs available at 1000 RPM) and it sounds good going down the road under load (I've got dual flowmasters). The big drawback is the fuel economy, but around here gasoline is a little cheaper than diesel. Also I have found that I get better mileage than some of my friends with the V8s in their Rams, or about the same, But they say they go down to the single digits pulling heavy trailers and I can keep mine above that. I've got a buddy that has a Cummins in his truck and his biggest complaints is how loud the engine is (I guess that comes down to personal taste) and also the cost of parts when it comes time do do work on the engine. I had thought about a diesel when I was looking for a truck, but I just know gasoline engines better, and I also liked the idea of having a V10...

Just to give you some numbers: I get 13 MPG on the highway doing 65-70 and 11 in town. As for towing (loaded horse trailer) I get about 10 MPG doing 60.
