Transmission - starts off in 2nd gear
I dropped the pan myself about 100 miles ago when I did the fluid change. There was about 1/4 cup of sludge on the bottom, and a small amount of metal stuck to the magnet
Well, so much for their "expertise" on diagnosing the proble. The hours allowed for a rebuild is about 3 to 4 hours I believe. I recall it was faster than I had estimated. To change the solenoids, they gouged you. And their "expertise" was changing the almost famously known issue on these transmissions -the solenoids.
As for $3000 for a rebuild, they are ripping off the consumer (if it is a stock rebuild). Buy from outside the area, ship it in. Even with shipping, the cosxt is better. If truck is OK for now, drive to another market and pick one up.
There is somehting in the name "DIABLO" transmission I suppose......

yup...and fyi my tranny is being rebuilt right now at a local shop ..$1050 to rebuilt it and warranty it without adding the torque converter (which Is what I believe you need) and the Overdirve unit which was cracked in my case.... so dont let some of the crazy rebuild prices quoted here scare you away from at least getting an estimate. all together with converter and OD unit along with complete rebuild and a gear that drives the planetaries I'm looking at $1,550 before taxes

thats the shop where mine is!..lol what did he use for fluid?
not really sure.....but he did mention putting a modifier in it...but so far so good....been about a month and almost time to check out wot shifts......
as far as the fliud there was a guy on here I haven seen in a while who had half a million miles on his ram and stated he had used the dextron 2 stuff since it was rebuilt and it had over 200,000 miles on it since then... I guess if its not mixed and used from the get go? I havent had anyone actually explain to me what the difference is in technology that requires the ATF+4 over other fluids in these transmissions..are the clutches made of different material?. I know many have had failure shortly after switching to something other or mixing types but then again some people claim that just flushing or replacing the fluid with new fluid of the same type will speed up failure so... It seems like voodoo magic with these things sometimes..

My 46RE transmission started giving me trouble today. After putting it in reverse and giving it a little throttle, when I put it in drive, it starts off in 2nd gear. If I put it in reverse and then put the selector in the 1 position, it will start off normally. However, when putting it in D, it apparently starts of in second gear.
The truck starts in P and N, but not in R, D, 2, or 1. Haynes says this means the selector is adjust correctly. I crawled under and checked for loose wires. I also checked the transmission fluid and it is full. Years ago, a dealer marked they did a software update.
The truck has about 218,000 miles on it. About 400 miles ago, I replaced the filter and trans fluid (ATF4+).
Any ideas about what part of the transmission may be causing the problem? Can I diagnose this or fix it myself - I can replace parts I can get to from the pan, but am not prepared to remove or rebuild the transmission.
