Not sure if that's high or not, seems reasonable to me but I've never had exhaust work done either.

Only thing he said I didn't like was that there isn't enough room at the manifold for 2.5" pipe so he'd just cut off the cat and run the new pipes from there, using the stock y pipe.

That isn't gonna fly.

I'm toying with the idea of just running true dual all the way back, which totally eliminates the y pipe.
I used to do complete dual exhaust, manifold back to the tips, including mufflers, for 200 bucks on trucks. (I did more chevy's than I really care to think about.....)

For mine, I am just gonna stick with single 3", a low restriction reasonably quiet muffler, and call it a day.

Seems the guy that WAS renting the shop I like to use, is no longer there, and the shop is going to revert to the original owner, who is NOT going to open up a 'real' business, just do exhaust on the side.... so, seems I am going to have a warm shop to play in available to me again. YEE HAA!!

So can you fit 2.5" pipe up to the manifold or does it need to be a bit smaller?

There's plenty of room... sometimes had to be a bit 'creative' on the pipe to manifold interface.... but, most exhaust manifolds are 2.5" outlets anyway.... At least, on the chevy's.... didn't do that many dodges.... no idea why.
