Default distributor - replacement

I am doing the plenum fix now and have a good view at the distributor.

I am having no problem with the truck but there is 120,000 miles or so on it.

Should I replace it and if so do I replace the whole thing or just the cap and rotor?

I found a thread in the DIY forum but it links to pictures that are not there.

Is there a good right up anywhere.

Hello, heyyou

Just change cap and rotor. I have never had a distributor go bad. And I keep vehicle for a long time. One of my present vehicles has 275,000 miles on it. I only have one with less that 60,000 - it is a 1988 model.

Also, if you pull dist, you have to have fuel sync reset with a computer.

Is it a big deal changing the cap and rotor as far as getting them back in the same place.

I'm worried i will change them and then put the whole engine back together and it will not start.

If I mess with the cap and rotor and the engine will not start I will have to try and mess with it with the keg back on.

?? the cap and rotor are designed to be changed without pulling the intake off the engine? How do you think everyone else does a tuneup?

I know that, I am just saying its right in front of me now so I might as well change it instead of having to do it over the intake.

It is a lot easier with the intake removed. Do it now and save some time. The disty has a notch for the key on the cap. Make sure you push the rotor all the way down into position. Be careful not to break the cam sensor which is inside the distributor at the bottom. I also put plug wires on cap and pushed them aside before putting intake back on so I made sure i got them in the correct firing order.

Ive heard the brass contact ones hold up longer although they cost more...I have new wires , cap and rotor to replace myself...hopefully you wont find a broken bolt and a zip tie holding the cap on like I did..
