Default Losing Fuel Pressure 01 1500

Hello-

I have a 01 ram 1500 5.2. Its a great truck, but in the last 6 months it seems I am loosing fuel pressure or something. I say this because when cold or after sitting a while if I just turn the key and start it it cranks for a while, then sputters and starts. BUT i have figured out that if I turn the key on and off 3 times and let the pump build up pressure, it starts right up on first crank. It takes 3 times because when I turn the key n the pump only pumps so much each time.

NOW, I am not that auto savy so please dont attack my ignorance.

Does this sound like the pump, or hose leak, or injector or what? I would like to be able to just get in and start my truck. and next year I might sell it, (not sure yet, I hate to get rid of a great truck, just cant afford the gas). and if I sell it, I will loose out if I have to explain, OH y the way you have to key on and off several times to start it.

Any ideas? I do have another pump off a parts truck we have, same year and all.

Your help is greatly appreciated!
Tony

Definitely will have to replace the fuel pump to correct the problem. Check valve in the pump is bad.

Just as a side note. Fuel pumps do go bad and wear out but their life can be extended by never letting the fuel level get below 1/4 tank. The fuel pump sits down in the gas and relies on the gas to keep it cool. When the fuel level get below 1/4 tank, the fuel pump is exposed, starts to heat up and over time will cause premature failure. Just a suggestion.
