Default smoke-like substance through air vents

I have a 97 ram and I am having a problem with the air quality of the cabin. There appears to be smoke coming through the air vents of the dashboard. However, it is not actually smoke (like it has no smell, nothing is overheating under the hood) it appears more to be dirt or something of that nature? The major problem I have with it is-

1. the slime-like stuff condenses on my windshield and I cant see anything while driving. especially at night
2. it is very unpleasant to look at. (it comes pouring through even without having any heat or air con on or even the blowers on)

Please help if you know of anything. Thanks.

Yup, heater core. Time to press the search button on the black bar up top.

+ 1 more on the heater core (hey! that rhymes!)

But you should be smelling antifreeze as well - unless there is none in the system!

When you do the heater core (because that's the problem) Be sure to clean out that area with some Lysol to kill off the smell and germs.

Hey thanks guys. I have done alot of research into the heater core. And I am pretty much certain you are all right. The only thing I am confused about is- everything I am reading tells me that the carpet underneath the core should be wet. There is a slighty blue tint on the carpet. But it is in a little spot and even after driving 45 minutes, it is not dripping or anything.

Also, if anyone has dealt with this problem before, I am wondering what it is like. I have basic/ intermediate mechanical work skills. It seems that is all you need to fix the problem. Is this true? Well some skills and a lot of time?

Thanks alot again. I only have one post on here and I am already loving this site.

When my evap core went out I had the wet floor.

When my heater core went out I had smoke in the vents and eventually coolant smell, but never wet floor.

Your core is on its way out or you have a fire in your dash
