Another Tranny Victim - Maybe ('98 Auto)
.
Looks like I might be joining the tranny failure club soon. Our auto trany is acting up lately. We seem to loose drive once it gets hot. Last time it did it, we had the stealership flush it, change the filter, and adjust the bands. That was about a week ago. This afternoon, it lost drive again. Sounding like it might be a deeper problem. Any suggestions? I changed out the shift sensor a little over a month ago.

Hmm... gotta be a sensor or something, cause after sitting overnight, it did fine today. Wonder if changing the speed sensor a few weeks prior to the flush and fluid change has anything to do with it. Maybe I should have put in a fresh one right after the service.

PROBLEM CURED!!!
Well, it looks like our transmission is happy now, and shifts great! The last thing we had done, which probably was the whole problem all along, was the Throttle Kick-Down Spring replacement. Apparently ours had broken, and the dealer tech says that would cause irratic shifting. So, one of the first easy checks for anyone out there with shifting problems I'd recommend checking the status of their spring.
Here's a pic of the spring, to help locate it...

P/N: 53009055 $2.95
So, to recap, here's the list of things we did to try and fix our shifting problem. These are all things that could cause shifting problems, and all should be checked/done on a regular basis, if you dodn't want to replace a transmission assembly...
Fluid Level Check
Fluid/Filter Change (Tranny Flush would be better)
Speed Sensor Replacement (Adavanced Auto - GP Sorenson # 779-9702 - $28)
Band Adjustment
In-Line Check Valve Replacement (Tranny PressureCooler Line - P/N: 52028670AH - $47)
Throttle Kick-Down Spring (see above)
One big thing to note... make sure that anyone who drives your Dodge, knows that if the tranny suddenly won't go into Drive (only has 1st and 2nd) make sure that they stop driving it immediately. I've read posts where the spouce or friend keeps driving, and internal meltdown occurs... very spendy result.
I hope that the things we have done, and regular preventive maintenance will lead to a long transmission life.

Okay maybe not cured yet...
The wife got home, and I wanted to show her how well it shifts now. We head out across town and everything is great. Then she drives on the way back home. I guess it got up to temperature, and... Drive goes away agin. @!$#%&*!
So, now we're back to the drawing board again. I'm thinking the only thing left is the sensor inside. I'll have to look thru posts and find out more.
This tranny shift problem is really getting old! Dodge should come out with a recall, and replace all '94-'01 ones with the 3rd gen trannies, cause ours are obviously junk.

I say it's the governor pressure sensor, your loosing line pressure somehow... or maybe your TC is going out... (it is the pump...)
