1999 Ram pre-ignition/detonation and vacuum noise
Hello Everyone,
I am new to this site and have read through a good amount of the threads regarding the detonation and or pre-ignition of the 5.2L V8. The only thing is, I still have some questions. I have a 1999 ram with the 318 (5.2) with about 90k on it. Its the 5 speed, reg cab long box (if that matters) and still has some engine ping. I replace the plenum gasket, re-routed plug wires per tsb suggestion, and replaced the plugs and it still pings. I have not done the distributor cap, but haven't noticed that being a culprit in any discussions yet. I did notice however, that it only pings under load (towing, going up hills, etc.. .) Also, I have noticed my truck has a vacuum (sucking) noise when cold, and when at idle. It also does not idle smooth when its cold. It has done this since day one and I have never been able to find a vacuum leak. Here are my questions:
1.) Is there a way to definitively diagnose the pinging issue?
2.) What should I do to diagnose the vacuum issue?
3.) Would an exhaust upgrade(cat?) resolve this (pinging) issue?
4.) Are these topics related?
5.) Where can I get a decent replacement dash? - unrelated
Thank you all for your time and input.
