Default replacing upper dash board cover

The dash in my 01 ram has a crack on the upper cover starting at the defroster vent. I am thinking of replacing the upper dash and was wondering how hard it is to remove and replace the top portion of the dash boad. Has anybody done this? Thanks

It's a royal pain in the ****...or so I've heard.

Here are some threads with info on how to do it (you probably will have to register to view them):
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/d...highlight=core
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/d...t=dash+replace

They're threads about replacing the evap core, but you need to pull the dash to do that.

Also from what I've heard, these are the best dash replacements:
94-97 - http://www.genosgarage.com/CoastalDa...tl.cfm?&DID=30
98- 02 - http://www.genosgarage.com/CoastalDa...tl.cfm?&DID=30

Looks to me like they're just covers that go over the stock one though. [&:] You could get one direct from Chrysler, but they're prone to re-cracking as the quality is no better than the one the truck came with.

I have an order in for a dash assembly from a local (relatively) all-truck wrecking yard. Dont know the price yet, but I cant argue a whole lot b/c what started as a crack now looks like an axe attack on the top of mine. The guy running the yard says he would have had plenty in stock normally, bit the local new car dealers have been breaking alot of them lately doing evaporator replacements.
We've had four heat waves here in the last four weeks, so all of a sudden everybody wants their A/C fixed. Go figure.

hey cablguy - did you ever get a new dash in? My 01 now is literally falling in - last week a triangle piece just fell in!

Has anyone replaced their dashboard yet, and if so, has that one started to crack also. Seems like if you order a new dash from Chrysler, the same thing would happen (unless they changed vendors since 01)
