what kind of 'fooling' are you looking for?

if you're looking to pass the sniffers, you're going to want it as lean as you can 'safely' get it.. the o2 can be jacked with several different ways to accomplish that.. you can approach it from two different angles- you can mod the upwind o2 sensor (a spare) and use it, or you can do some research and find an o2 that produces different values, but that are still within parameters the PCM will accept w/o tossing a code and ruining your day..

the sensor needs to sniff both sides of the pipe.. making it fatten up the width is easier than having it pull fuel.. however, it's conceivable that the exterior ports on the sensor (where the wire meets the body) can be opened up a little to introduce more air on the clean side.. this would make the interior seem too rich, so it would pull fuel.. it would have to be carefully done so that you don't introduce too much clean side flow, because being too lean will trip a code- and you won't pass..

another thing you can do, which aren't o2 sensor related, is run the engine hotter.. hotter engines pull fuel.. the easiest thing to do is find a higher range 'stat.. to the tune of 205~210*.. another way, is to research and discover the voltage register of the temperature sensor/sender.. If you can locate that, and introduce a potentiometer into the wiring, you could dial in the temperature you want it to read, which would be higher, which would lean the engine without setting a code (so long as you find a 'comfortable' slightly higher reading, and don't go too high)..

yet another thing you can do to lean it out: pull the IAT and put it is a warmer spot.. the air introduced would be cooler than the truck registers, and it wouldn't know to add fuel to it..



at any rate, there are ways to beat the bag, you just gotta figure it through.. no matter what you do to get by, DON'T DRIVE THAT RIG ANY APPRECIABLE DISTANCE WITH THE MODS.. you don't want to ruin your engine from running too lean.. Stochiometric 14.7:1 air/fuel ratio is what your truck's system of sensors/PCM are aiming for.. performance is best at 13.8.. fuel economy is best at 15.2.. you'd be aiming for somewhere around 15.2~15.5:1 or so.. the truck won't be so lean you burn it up, but lean enough that more of the catalyst (fuel) is burned- and your emissions seem stellar..

the number one (and two) thing to do, though, is simple: run some sea-foam through it the evening before, allow it to idle out- and run the **** out of it on the way there (Italian tune-up), taking them a warm engine..

Thanks for the ideas Drew..

I'm going to need to look at the O2 sensors closer, I've never noticed the holes before.
The Smog test guy's (the smart one's) will always you to take the vehicle out on the freeway for a long ride to get it hot.

if anyones interested a friend of mine sells a kit that modifies the o2 signal to the pcm when the cat is removed. the kit sells for 85.00 dollars and plugs into the rear o2 sensor.

the fastman ones don't have the plug on the end.the ones i can get have the plug so if you want to plug the o2 back in or take it off if your selling the vehicle simple plug and play.he said he would sell them for 75.00
