Had a similar but not identical issue with my 97 1500. Grinding and clunking from the front right.

I ended up replacing both front hubs (starting to get sloppy), both rotors (one 'split' right down the middle so the two discs separated, and the other was starting to go) noticed that some of the ribs between the discs had cracked and the inner disc was starting to warp. One caliper and new pads.
Rear shoes and drums were in real good shape.

I know it sounds like alot, but $350 into the truck is better than sitting on the side of the road or worse.

Good luck

took it for a ride with the window down and I can hear a rubbing sound coming from the front left, sounds like metal on metal, assuming it is the hub bearing since I just replaced the rotor and pads. Will get it torn back apart in the morning and find out, but with 215k on the clock i'm sure the wheel hubs need replacing (I've had it since 150k and havent replaced them)

Dude just came across the same issue, I can't figure out if it is the hub assembly or the axle. I'm thinking of just changing them both.
