Default So Ive been reading about...stuff

Been browsing the hughes website in preparation for my plenum fix coming up in the next week or two, and found this article referencing the kegger mod.

It mentions that the runners are smaller than the ports on the head, I havent seen this in any of the kegger mod threads Ive found. Maybe the fact that since the mod cuts the runners off/down solves this problem? I would like to address it when my intake is off if I can, as I will be doing the kegger mod.

Ill also be porting/modding the stock throttle body while its off, but that is fairly simple.

On a side note, anybody know of any good articles to read regarding..stuff?

from what i undertand, the stock manifold is great for low end power, shortening the runners brings that power into the mid and high range areas. this does not solve the problem with the intake ports being smaller than the head ports. to fix that problem, you could go in with small die grinder and open up the intake ports about 1/10 of an inch in both directions (1/20" on the right of the port, 1/20" on the left, 1/20" on the top and 1/20" on the bottom, totaling 1/10" wider and 1/10" taller, making it the same size as the head ports). this will reduce the bottle-necking of the air trying to get into the heads, so you get better air flow.

That does. I just found this interesting and havent seen it mentioned on any tread I've seen and thought maybe it'd be cool to share.

From what I've gathered shortening the runners doesn't lose that much low end, If any, especially coupled with the plenum fix.

i've heard very little about it. haven't tried it myself but it sounds like a pretty good idea. might be something to try out while you're doing the other fixes/mods.

What you are talking about is "Port Matching". Not really such a bad idea, as it allows the engine to flow better.

Cutting the runners down just moves the power band up a couple hundred RPM, you still have good bottom end torque, and some more midrange. The kegger manifold sucks up top, no matter what you do to it.

Yes I'm aware of this. The kegger mod just moves some more power up mid range, which is great for daily drivers and such. But you don't really lose bottom end, especially if you're fixing as big a problem as the plenum.

I like the kegger intake though, it's good for what our trucks do. Which is to be a truck, and do truck stuff.

Newer trucks seem to do it all, but they look confusing as hell to work on. And most of the improvements have been made in the new automatic transmissions

So you think this is a good idea no?

I went so far as to buy another kegger, so I could mod at my leisure, and when the time came, have another manifold to just swap in there. I can't really tell ya how much of a difference just the kegger mod in and of itself made, as my plenum was seriously blown.

I was just gonna mod my stock kegger. I don't really wanna go through the hassle of finding a good kegger and paying for it. I've got limited funds as it is.

Honestly, after I do this I won't be able to correctly say how much of a difference the mod and port matching made as I suspect my plenum is seriously blown also.

Idk the truck runs great, Amd maybe the plenum is amazingly ok(doubtful) but I'm just so excited to finally be able to fix her up right.

I did my intake by picking up one from a JY for $25 ( inlcuding fuel rails, injectors, and TB) and modded it and installed plate (Cheaper on e-bay than Hughes) and installed double roller timing set. Since I had tranny issues, a pint of oil in plenum, and brought it home at 40 mph (2 hour trip) I don't know exactly how much modding the keg did for it. But it runs great. No complaints. I'll probably mod the take off kegger and sell (if I get time to do the mod) it to a local Ram owner. Recoup a few bucks.

If you do it fast enough I'll buy it. Did you port match the runners to the head though? I'm interested in that mostly.
