........ hoping this isn't a common known issue or something stupid.

A word of advice - take it or don't - it's your choice.

One person told you cat, but you discount it. Three or four others have mentioned plenum AND possible cat on this thread, and you discount that.

To make it official, this is a common issue.

FWIW - take it or don't - it's your choice.

Check to see that all your connectors have clips. If you have a 1998-2001 then you have EV6 connectors with the red lick tabs and you should not have to worry. Howver, it could be the injector connectors. they get loose and they won't bite on the male prongs in the injectors.
fyi we have been quoting EV1 as the connector style when in fact its a jetronic connector and the 2nd generation style injectors are called EV1...EV6 is the third generation. I read its a common mistake... but it makes things less confusing when I go back and reread injector threads...

I also have a lean cylinder (#1) with mis codes and poping under load. I replaced the injectors and will be test driving today.... I suggest you buy the $25 leak down tester at harbor freight and do that test if you havent already to check the heads condition...

It doesn't have to be lean to be hot. Pop a test pipe in place of the cat for a while and see what happens. Keep an eye on the codes to make sure the CEL is nothing more than cat failure during the test.

The cat is clogged and the precat o2 is bad. And depending on how long the cat has been clogged, you may have burnt or badly carboned valves and or a cracked head. Unscrew the the o2 and see if it runs any better. Might be too late anyway. Verify the cat and do a compression test.

If at first you don't succeed, tell the new buyer "it's been good to me".
