Well the pcv siphons the blow by vapors from crankcase to the intake/engine, so residue from the oil vapors should be normal I believe. If it hasn't been replaced in 50K+ miles, replace w/ valve from the dealer only. To test: Shake the valve to make sure the pintle works. And while idling take off the oil fill cap and put a piece of paper over it, the paper should be sucked inwards. Also while idling disconnect the hose w/ valve attached from the valve cover and feel if there's suction on the valve. Also make sure the hose isn't plugged.

As a good rule of thumb: If you suspect the PCV valve might be bad, replace it (with a dealer part). As cheap as they are the only way you could save money by pondering the decision would be if your time has no value at all.

Oil in the hose is a darn good indicator that the valve is a goner. The only other explanation would be severe blow-by.

I pick them up two at a time so I have a new one in the garage. I do this for all my vehicles. The only ones I use the generica auto parts brand is the metal Chevy (yeah, it's old)

I read the manufacturer recommends the pvc be replaced every 24,000 miles... also rattling while shaking does not prove its not sticking at all...if it doesnt rattle its stuck for sure but if it does it could still be sticking.
