welcome to df.
there is a common problem where the transmission makes a mild groan to a terrible clatter when its in reverse and everything is very cold.

shift to neutral for a minute or so, maybe even drive forward a little to get things warmed up a little. if the sound goes away, its the cold temperature noise from the regulator? valve.

report back.

A "clunk" when shifting into reverse is very common in these trucks.

Grinding however is not

The only time my truck made a grinding noise was when i didn't completely move the transfer case shift/lever/thingy back into 2H. Make sure the drive selector is firmly locked into 2H.

Mine moans and groans pretty bad when cold in reverse. Grinding it does not, however.
