Default Checking trans fluid

So I am seeing that people check trans fluid while vehicle is in N.

I thought you are to check it in P per the operators manual.

Seems checking it in neutral is a bit dangerous.

What is the proper procedure?

As per the 96 fsm, just set your e brake and do it on level ground.

FLUID level check
Transmission fluid level should be checked monthly
under normal operation. If the vehicle is used for
trailer towing or similar heavy load hauling, check
fluid level and condition weekly. Fluid level is
checked with the engine running at curb idle speed,
the transmission in NEUTRAL and the transmission
fluid at normal operating temperature.

And the parking brake set, It will hold as long as you adjust that also according the FSM or Haynes manual scheduled maintenance. I highly suggest you get both. One of them is 20 bucks and the other is free form the FAQ/DIY section.

Me either, but believe it or not it helps . And sometimes has better pics and tips for various operations than the FSM does.
