tranmission truble

Default tranmission truble

i have a 98 ram 1500 the tranmission shifts fine all the way up gears but when it trys to shift down from od it's like it misses a gear and is between two gears it sounds like it is grinding would that be the bands or something eals i know the shifter is off a little bit to would anyone have any suggestions for me

How many miles on it? Check fluid level in neutral to make sure it is correct. How is the fluid? It sounds like TCC disengaging rough.

fluid is all good but i know in order to get the key out if i don't push it up into pack it wount come out the shifter is out of ajust ment alittle to

If you look in the faq section, there is a thread where you can download the factory service manual. Grab the 01 version for your truck. Procedure for adjusting the shift linkage is in there. You might have some worn parts as well.

If the linkage at the trans doesn't go into the 'detent' position for whatever gear, it may cause some odd shifting issues.

Check trans fluid in neutral. Park gives an inaccurate reading.

I would suggest getting the linkage adjusted first before tackling anything else. otherwise it could turn into a circus.

There is a free service manual that you can downlaod in the FAQ/DIY section.
