Default 97 Ram, Neutral Saefty Switch

V6 Dodge Ram, 97, Standard
Is this the neutral safety switch? I unplugged it and truck started, unplugged the only other option (2 wires) and it also started fine.

My problem is rear tail lights flicker when backing up, or dont down light up at all.
If I move gear shifter around usually I get get them lit up.

Also, not sure if this is related. Starting truck has started to become a bit of an issue.
Was taking 3-4 turns of the key before starter would engage fully. Wondering if this could
be an isolated starter issue or possibly the neutral safety switch as well? I picked up starter last week to swap
and since picking it up I have yet to have an issue starting truck.

thanks for your time

???

Neutral safety switch is mounted in the driver side of transmission.

You can find a service manual to download in the FAQ/DIY section.

Ok so this picture leads me to believe it was the part I oringally thought was the NSS not the one I took picutres of

NSS parts at Lordco were all 3 pronged instead of 2 though

Yep. Pics work now. What kind of tranmission is that? Doesn't look anything like a 46RE. The neutral safety switch is near the linkage going into tranny on those.

Hopefully the manual will provide more info.... Mine is a 99 with a 5.2 L.

Manual 5 speed for V6, just got the truck a couple weeks ago. Haven't figured out what transmission is even yet. I took a guess and figured it had to be the NV3500 Manual Transmission

That's the speed sensor, the neutral safety switch is more towards the front.

Sorry, brain freeze. Didn't realize we are talkin manual tranny. Here is the neutral safety switch. I suspect it's down by the clutch pedal.

It's at the top of the actual clutch pedal, on the rod going into the clutch master cylinder. There is a white plastic clip that you have to slide one way to pop off, then the switch itself will come off of the linkage.

I modded mine so that I am allowed to use my brain, and the starter will turn over whenever I tell it to.

Wow, got it right. I figured a switch that looked like that would be down by the clutch pedal. Oh well, I'm just trolling for people posting threads in the wrong sections.
