Question putting a cam in my truck?

i was thinking about buying a cam and putting it in my 1994 dodge ram 1500. im most likely going to purchase it from compcams.com cause i heard they had great products. im looking at something like a hydraulic flat tappet or something like that maybe. they have alot of stuff there. if i buy this would i have to go buy anything else to install it in my truck?

You don't want a flat tappet cam, in your engine set up to use roller lifters..... that's a step backwards in technology. Roller cams can have more aggressive ramps, so you get better performance out of a cam with the exact same specs. (more area under the curve. )

Cam selection depends on what you want to use your truck for, and what other supporting mods you have/plan on adding.

Depending on the cam you go with, you may need new springs/locks/retainers, maybe even pushrods. Replacing lifters along with your new cam is cheap insurance. (under 150 for the mopar performance guys.....) In all reality, replacing the springs and such on a high mileage motor really isn't such a bad idea.

I think he was looking at flat tappet because those came are 150-199 bucks a set that INCLUDES new lifters.

Just for a computer friendly cam, you are looking at $350 for just the cam. Then you have listers, springs etc (All the stuff Hey you said). All in all, you are looking at 1000 dollars. Then you need to SEND your PCM to B&G for a reflash (Blind flash).

I would wait until you got a 1996 or newer truck to put a camshaft into. THen you can ust buy a handheld tuner and get a dyno tune.
