A camshaft cam make huge gains, even a mild one:

Lastrights, there is a big difference between 1K and 6K.
Plus the skill involved with stroking an engine. In fact, you would be better of just purchasing a 408 from a reputable builder and dropping it in. You would probably SAVE money than doing it yourself considering all the extra tools and dials you would need to buy to build an engine. ANd you don't want to go with the "autozone special of the week" when using torque wrenches.

Op do you or don't you have the 1.7 already? The info in your garage says you do. If yes then there is math to do to figure out your final lift.

If you want to know how much take the lift of your cam divide it by 1.6 example .587 (Lift) / 1.6 (rocker) = .366875

Now take
.366875 x 1.7 = .623 <---that’s the new lift..... So you go from .587 lift to .623 lift.

R/T cam with 1.7

.467 with 1.7= .496 ext
.458 with 1.7= .486 int

R/T+10 cam with 1.7

.467 with 1.7= .496
.482 with 1.7= .512

As most have said you may need new valve springs, keepers and retainers and possibly new pushrods. If you stay within reason for a cam you don't need new valves.

You should have done the cam when the M1 was put on you now have to do that work all over again.
