A couple weeks ago my transmission stopped working. I lost all reverse, drive, manual 2nd and manual 1st. The transmission would make a whinning noise when in gear or nuetral but no output. I pulled the tranny assuming it was a bad pump or a blown accumulator seal. A week and a half later I'm still at a loss. I can't seem to find the smoking gun that took out the transmission. I found plenty of friction material in the pan, it was from the torque converter clutch falling apart. There was some metal shavings associated with that as well. The filter wasn't plugged, the pump was in good shape, and all clutches and bands looked fine. I can't seem to find any stripped splines. I even pulled the valve body apart hoping it was plugged up, it wasn't. I cut open the torque converting hoping it was the problem, the lock up clutch was gone but nothing else wrong with it. This is certainly not my first transmission, but this one is certainly baffling me. My uncle, a transmission builder of 20+ years has looked at it and can't seem to find the issue either. Any assistance or ideas with a direction to look would be awesome. I just hate the idea of putting it back together without finding the problem that definately caused the issue.

Doesn't take much to plug/jam one of the valves... or, the governor pressure solenoid.... If the tc went, it was time for a rebuild in any event.....

There are replacement metal pistons for some of the plastic fellers in the trans, that would be a good upgrade as well.......

You don't always find the smoking gun......

 

It was definately time for a rebuild. Its had a good 100,000 mile life towing a 7000 pound fifth wheel. It lasted long enough. I bought all the common upgrades, including a shift kit, aluminum accumulator, and addition to the clutch packs. Im even getting a good quality torque converter. I just don't want to put it all together only to have to take it back out. Its been my experience that when a transmission fails with no warning its usually something pretty obvious or something pretty major.

 

Yeah, the 'usually' qualifier in the statement can come back and bite ya in keester......

What did the governor pressure solenoid look like? Have a bunch of crap on it?

 

It had a few flakes on the screen but nothing blocking it.

 

May remain a mystery then...... Rebuild it, upgrade some parts, put it back in, and it will more than likely work......

Haha I've read all 84 something pages of that thread. Couldn't find a comparable issue with a resolution. Its probably going to be a build it and prey it works kinda fix.

 

I only posted it for suggestions and parts to use when the tranny gets rebuilt again.

 

That thread has been quite a help. Its certainly the most comprehensive tranny thread Ive seen.
