thanks for the replies evryone, ive never bought a truck with this many miles before although i had a 94 ram 1500 that i bought with 175,00 and ran it to a little over 200,000 miles and i sold it to a farmer who still uses it on his farm. its beat to chit and is still running good for him. magnum v8's are just a damb good engine if you ask me, anyway, the guy who owns this v10 ram is real big into gocart racing and he used this v10 ram to pull a decent size inclosed gocart trailer all over timbucktoo with 3 or 4 gocarts and all the tools and stuff in it. not a real heavy trailer but i would imagine a good 5-6 thousand pounds. i asked him what gears are in it and he said he has no idea but it pulls like a horse. well, im gonna go look at it tomarow morning so ill let ya know if i gett'r or not. one good thing is if the trans would take a crap there is a small but dang good transmission shop in a neiboring town from me that rebuilds them for 1200-1500 bucks.

Chances are its got a 3.73 ratio in a dana 70 rear end. Good ratio for highway pulling. And as said before the gas mileage sucks but the trade off is a gas motor that puts down more horsepower and almost as much torque as the 24v cummins (stock that is lol) at that time.
If you are satisfied with the test drive i would say go for it.

Well........ It ran great shifted great and drove great as the guy told me. It had lots of power but unfortunately his idea and my idea of "It's in good shape" were 2 different things . those pictures on the internet can be so deceiving. there was more rust on it than I wanted to live with and it had lots and lots of ding and scratches. but then again , I guess what can you expect for 3600 dollars , I told him what I thought and I said that this would make it dang good work truck for a farmer but I was just looking for something in a little nicer shape , he said okay well if you think it's too high of a price yet just say a lower offer. I said no I think I'm gonna keep on looking sorry , but I could sense that he just wanted it off of his driveway and who knows if I wanted it I could have maybe bought it for 2500 dollars but it was just too rough for me , so anyway the search continues , thanks for your input guys

lol that changes the day we throw a fueling box on the truck

of course the 47re has to be addressed when we do just a fueling box since we gain over 120hp and 400tq at the rears from just that.

before I did all the mods to my truck, i had just a lift pump, stock turbo and injectors, added just a boost elbow to the turbo to adjust the gate, and the adrenaline box...dynoed with box on and box off..

results:

Size: 41.5 KB

with the injectors, studs, twins, clutch, results bumping through all power levels on the fueling box and order is stock (box off), timing added, timing + ECM fueling added, timing + ECM fueling + wiretap pump fueling (maximum power)

Did 2500's come with anything more than 3.55's and 4.10's? I know half tons came with 3.92's in some instances, but I have never heard of a factory 3.73 in these trucks.

LOL @ the major swing off-topic...

That's a bummer, OP. But, might be better off. I bought my 99 2500 V8 a year ago for $1800. It's been worth it so far, even though it breaks down weekly.

Default Griz here, Its too much money!

I found a 2001 dodge ram 2500 quad cab 4 wheel drive with the v10 engine. within the last 6 months it has had new plugs and wires , a tune up, new brakes all the way around , and a new radiator. it's in really good shape for its age and miles. this is a private sale and he told me that it runs great, shifts great, and it drives down the road straight as an arrow. it has 220,000 miles on it , he started at 5000 dollars and I have him down to 3600 bucks. so what do you guys think would it be a bad idea to buy 1 with 220,000 miles on it. It won't see hardly any miles if i would buy it. I am a truck driver so I'll only use it to run around town when I'm home on the weekends plus a little camping. I just sold my durango and in the 6 months I owned it I put less than 1000 miles on it. so what do you guys think , is there any high mileage V10's out there that might make me feel better about this . Thanks.
Griz here in response to your question i think 3600 is too much for one with 220,000 on it. It will have an 47re auto most likely so if i were going to pay that kind of money it better come with maintenance records that go back for the life of the truck. Mine is a 96 with a 8.0 and 47re i have all the maintenance records. It only has 91,500 original miles and i have less than $2000.00 in the purchase price and im the second owner. I find them all over for under 4500 with less than 175,000. The v10 is not indestructible. If its not maintained well it will go to hell in a hand basket quickly.
the weekest part of the 47re is the overdrive. If you have a 5 spd standard your in good shape. You will get a little bit better milage with a 6 spd. But will lose a pretty good amount of pulling torque on your hi end.
milage over all with the v10.if well maintained and serviced regularly 9.5 on the low side 11.5 on the high side. Just joined this forum so i dont know how to send pics yet but i pull a triple axle car and light equipment trailer 22 ft. With a load capasity of 16,500 lbs. I don't lack for power but i don't used overdrive in the mountains or rolling hills hope this helps you to make up your mind. One last thing. You might consider the 5.9 cummins its an awesome engine the last one i owned got 18 mpg empty or loaded and when i gave it to my son it had 463,000 on it and he's still driving it 4 years later with no major issues. I think he has 525,000 on it now. I have a 95 v10 with 310,000 and is still going strong.
Preventative maintenance is the secret to longevity.
