99 Ram 4x4 and trans temp install question
Guys I pull a 3840 tandem axle trailer and boat with my 99 Ram 4x4 quad Sport. My tranny has been rebuilt three times. I think they have it right this time. So I want to install a temp gauge. The steel lines run from the tranny to the radiator - enters the bottom, out to the aux cooler bottom line and then back to the tranny. Check valve is gone. One line is the coming from the front of the tranny and the other from the back. Both on the drivers side. So could I mount my temp sender in the engine compartment near where the flex lines join on the lower line? Seems like I would have some temp drop, but it would be consistent and not much I would guess before the oil enters the radiator.
1. which line - the front or back one near the tranny
2. Can I install it in the engine compartment?

For the best accuracy, install the temp probe as close to the trans as possible. The line going to the lower fitting on the radiator is the output line, that's the one you want to install the gauge in.
I think its diesel manor that has splice-in fittings for the temp probe.... it uses compression fittings, but, that area is not high pressure like a brake line, so, should be fine for use in this application.

It is 3/8th's. And mount it, as stated, as close to the tranny as possible. If not, you'll see at least a 30 degree difference by mounting near the radiator. As far as which line, it is the one that goes to the lower radiator connection. I'd tell you front or forward line on the tranny, but I think you can figure that one out yourself easy enough.
