Default Transfer case fluid change.

How much ATF +4 do I need to fill my transfer case? A friend told me 3 quarts, but I wanted to verify with you guys..

Also, whats the easiest way to actually fill the thing? Kind of awkward cause the fill hole is horizontal...

Any help appreciated! Thanks guys.

According to the FSM you will need 1.2 litres(2.5 quarts). I got that from the 2001 service manual in the DIY/faqs section. I filled mine using a funnel that has a bendable hose attached to it.

Take out the fill plug first.

Is that absolutely required...or does it just make it easier?

It makes sure that you can refill it, once you drain it. We had one member that drained his, then couldn't get the fill plug out to refill it...... can't really drive it to a shop that way.

my 1500 np231 only takes about 1 quart to refill.

note the fill/drain plugs are 10mm, not 3/8. careful - the smaller 3/8 will strip it out.
+1 on removing fill plug first, and when reinstalling, apply some liquid teflon or rtv and don't overtorque it. just snug it.

I put anti-seize on my fill and drain plugs. The fluid that came out was grimy and dark. It was nasty. It shifts into 4wd much easier after a fluid change.
