Not true, you can just reset the PCM by leaving the battery disconnected for a couple minutes.

OP for your misfire problems I would suggest routine tune up stuff (plugs/wires/cap/rotor) and if you have a few extra bucks pick up a Standard Motor Products (brand) Crankshaft sensor and Distributor pick-up coil (aka cam sensor). www.rockauto.com has the sensors for pretty cheap FYI. And there's a thread in the general discussion section with discount codes for the site.

I'm going out tonight to check if the distributor is arcing. Tomorrow I'm gonna be going to get new wires, cap, rotor. Hopefully that's the problem and not the injectors... or even worse... the pistons.

I doubt it's the bottom end... these motors are near indestructible, and run forever.

What has most likely occurred is your 2 holding bands are f*cked or need adjustment. Your tcm will take about 100miles to learn it has a new gov press sensor and reconfigure pressure to accommodate by then you could have seriously damaged clutch packs and the 2 holding clutches get the truck to a dodge dealership and have a quick learn preformed on the tranny. A quick learn is when we go in and erase the memory of the tcm followed by a # of procedures both us techs do and our software does. Here's the bad news though I had a 2000 Dakota with a 5.9 this exact same situation lol prior to being trained by and working for for Chrysler within 100 miles every clutch pack and both holding clutches were completely fryed so how many miles did the prev owner drive it like that and how many have you drove it like that?

Best code scanner I have ever owned - Snap On MTG 2500. No longer supported by Snap ON, available on e-bay pretty reasonable. Gives live data, engine and trans as well as other systems such as emmissions. (And can clear all codes, reveal stored counts that have not set CEL, etc)

well damn.. that's a kick in the pants. I got no clue how far the kid drove it like that. I drove maybe 60 klicks to where it's parked now. Got a rough estimate for how much a dealership would charge for that?

Don't get knotted up yet. And the dealer....they will charge as much as they can get out of you and then more.

Have you downloaded service manual from the FAQ/DIY section? This will help a lot. Trans section is very good and a novice gan understand most of it (except maybe the flow diagrams.)

And both bands toasting at the same time is not normal. Won't say it can't happen, but I have been studying these trannys, for nearly a year.

Regarding misfires - 2X1972 has the right idea. But also look at the TSB in the FAQ/DIY section for plug wire routing. ALso, disconnect negative cable from the battery and remove your TB and look inside the intake manifold with a small mirror and flashlight. See if there is oil pooling in there. This indicats that the plenum gasket is blown and needs replaced.

well, went out today and got a new cap, rotor, wire and coil. Gonna check the plug's. I think the kid said they were new. Since Imma have to take off the air filkter and housing, I'll check the plenum while I'm at it. hopefully that takes care of the misfire problems.
