2001 Ram with no power
When you check the plugs, see what kind are in there. If it is those high priced, illuminating, irradiating or any other fancy junk, toss them for the cooper ones. Others here have posted numerous threads that these trucks do not especially like the iridium (or whatever they are) plugs.
Just finished changing the rotor, cap, coil and wires. I didn't check the plugs... cause after trying to get at that damn cap.... I had enough for the day.
On the upside, the CEL is off (UN-hooked the battery to do the work) and when I started the truck up, no misfire codes came up anymore. On the down side the idol seems to be a little bit off as well, the tach needle seems to be a bit shaky. I don't think it'd be miss-wired or a cable not on tight... cause that would make the idol be pretty noticeably off... right? Also, could smell a little bit of gas. Could the timing be a bit off now? Any ideas?
As for the transmission, I'll deal with the part another weekend. I assume the CEL will come back on once I put the truck in drive and move it.

There is a TSB in the faq section for plug wire routing as well, to prevent cross-firing of cylinders....
The truck will need to re-learn it's idle.... no big deal there.
Yeah, I completely understand where you are coming from on the cap.... that's a pain. Do need to check the plugs though. If the rest of the parts were in need of replacement, pretty good bet the plugs are as well.
CEL won't immediately come back on. Only after you drive it for a bit. PCM won't set a misfire code until it sees quite a few of them.

So the idle isn't a real big issue... just let it run itself back to normal? If so... that's a relief. Hopefully the misfire problem is over now. And the plug's will be done, just another time. I still have to do tie-rods, ball joints and the rear U joint before going to a safety.
Just found the wire routing thread. My wires sure done look like that. Guess I got some more work to do. Thanks for all the help so far, by the way. It's been very helpful and very much appreciated.
What has most likely occurred is your 2 holding bands are f*cked or need adjustment. Your tcm will take about 100miles to learn it has a new gov press sensor and reconfigure pressure to accommodate by then you could have seriously damaged clutch packs and the 2 holding clutches get the truck to a dodge dealership and have a quick learn preformed on the tranny. A quick learn is when we go in and erase the memory of the tcm followed by a # of procedures both us techs do and our software does. Here's the bad news though I had a 2000 Dakota with a 5.9 this exact same situation lol prior to being trained by and working for for Chrysler within 100 miles every clutch pack and both holding clutches were completely fryed so how many miles did the prev owner drive it like that and how many have you drove it like that?
welcome to DF. you're about to become very popular. where are you located??
So, just got the truck on the road. I still have a misfire issue after changing the wires, plugs, rotor, cap and coil. Idle is a bit rough but worse when I drive. there's some backfiring from the exhaust while driving and lastly I got two new misfires (well, one actually). Cylinder 6 (still) and cylinder 3. So now I guess I should check the injector on 6. But three just showed up today, before the tune-up it was 4. Anyone got any ideas?
Ok.... So maybe the firing order wasn't correct. now the truck is running perfectly on all 8!! Also, got the sensor and solenoid changed. So, the truck now is in tip top shape. Thanks so much to all you guy's who helped me out. It's nice to finally drive that truck when everything is working properly.
Thanks once again, your help has been greatly appreciated.
