Do what I did, and have the dealership tap in and adjust your speedo and shift points for the new sized rubber. They reset the pinion rpms and have things working like stock again. This way, your speedo is accurate, and rpms aren't off.

How much did that cost you? Why didn't you just get a programmer like superchips?

I just used my Hypertech programmer to adjust for my tire size, seemed to work fine. I've heard other guys say that their programmers didn't seem to work correctly when they tried to adjust tire.

I did take mine to the dealer to reset for pinion after I changed my gears, and they said that on my year ('99) and others, there is no pinion adjustment, only tire size.

"Reprogram Speedometer for new oversized tires per customer's request
Reset Pinion Factor"... $37.50

Have you priced those Superchip Programmers? Way Overpriced!

Uh, not really that overpriced. They do much more then just change tire setting. For what you pay, you get a very good performance tuner, towing tuner, tire size adjust, etc...

Money well spent since it tunes the engine too.

I have a 98 ram and I heard somewhere that the Hypertech won't reprogram my speedo, is that true? I know the rams changed midway through 98 and mine is a newer one cause it has the newer interior.

Quoted from Dodgeram.org

Stopped at my Friendly Dodge Dealer this morning on the way to work and inquired about the procedure for programming the CAB. He looked in the service manual, looked in a couple others and finally dragged out the Chassis Diagnostic Manual. There, in section 29A, it explains the procedure needed to program the CAB for specific tire sizes. [The CAB sends a pulse stream to the PCM, which drives the speedo/odo; to change the calibration, the CAB needs to be told, among other things, the number of teeth on the RWAL sense ring and the rev/mi of the installed tires.]

So, if you change your tire size and your dealer hasn't a clue as to correcting the speed/odo, point him to the Chassis Diagnostic Manual, section 29A. It's all there.

Fest3er

NOTE: the 98 1/2 models do not use speedometer gears and the speed metering is taken from the ABS sensors. To change "gears" for different tire sizes requires reprogramming of the PCM. Dealers have been having problems with this procedure, and many axle ratio/tire size combinations are not available.

Can a Hypertech or a Superchips programmer do that reprograming?
