Default 1998 Ram - No Sound, BYPASSED AMP

I am having a problem where I have installed two stereos, and neither will play sound. I can get power, but no sound. It will work sometimes, but then it will just not play.

I have read a lot about people having similar problems, but I have completely bypassed the factory amp. I have run all new speaker wire from the head unit to new speakers. So, there should be nothing touching the factory amp.

There are no fuses blown, and everything on the head unit shows that it is playing music, but nothing comes from the speakers. As I mentioned, they will work sometimes, but then randomly go off.

Your head unit does have an amp that will run the speakers right?

You have to have faulty wiring somewhere. Verify that you hooked up the power correct. If you only get music from the FM/AM radio then you hooked your power into the antenna and should rewire to the remote start or some such thing

It is a DVD player, as well, and I had sound from that for a limited time. I thought that it might not be getting sufficient power, but that didn't make much sense when I have this issue with two different head units.

So you have two different head units? Or two speakers?

Wiring two head units together is a step above me

Also, I used a wiring harness, so I assume the power is hooked up correctly. I just connected the red and yellow from the stereo to the red and yellow on the harness and plugged it into the truck. I don't know what color the power and constant are on the truck side.

No, no. I have tried two head units (separately), so I am guessing it is not the head unit.

I have run my own wiring, and have aftermarket speakers. So, I assume nothing is touching the Infinity amps.

You have to wire the harness up from the head unit up to match the wiring from the truck. As in Left Speaker + goes to Left Speaker + in the wiring harness to the truck.

Have to have a wiring diagram of some sort or backtrack to the old speakers to find the right wires.

Te head unit should have its colors and wires on the back of it somewhere.

Never assume that same color wiring means they're the same, especially installing a new headunit into a 10+ year old truck

Fo to FAQ/DIY section and download the service manual. The wiring diagrams are in section 8W. It will gove you the color coding on the wires.

I have no idea where that section is. I would love the service manual.

I am guessing that I am not being real clear on this. What could possibly make it so that I am not getting sound to my speakers when I have bypassed the factory amp? It works intermittently, so I am sure I have the speakers wired correctly. It powers on, so I assume I have the 12v wired correctly, as well as the ground. It is wired correctly, as far as I can tell. However, I am not getting constant sound to the speakers.

To be blunt it can mean two things

1. It's wired wrong
2. Your speakers are garbage

Most likely 1.
