I have searched already and found that the problem is typically a vacuum line, but i was wondering if its possible since the 4wd is vacuum actuated is it possible for the 4wd to be engaging or the cad to be engaging without me moving the transfer case shifter?

 

If the vacuum switch on the t-case fails, anything is possible. GM had a problem with the switches rusting up, and then sticking in 4x4 mode...... don't know if dodge had that issue or not.

Also possible the actuator is just sticking, and not completely disengaging, or you have a broken vacuum line, or a short in the wiring, or a bad switch.... (yeah, long list of possible there.)

 

Dang just my luck never a simple answer. I'm assuming though that if the truck was in 4wd on city streets I should be able to tell a difference, right?
I was debating replacing the cad with that cable version anyways so maybe that would take care of it.

 

Checking and fixing the vac lines is rather simply. And the engine wants you to find the vac leak regardless of what you do to the CAD. http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/repair/..._engagment.htm

 

Oh ok, so is there an easy way to find out where the vacuum leak is? or have to just follow all the lines? My air does change to floor vents under hard throttle so im sure there is a leak just not sure how to track it down.

4wd light in the cluster is activated by shorting the 2 wires together which connect to the switch, on the drivers end/side of the CAD. under normal operation the vac operated cad slides the collar over to the drivers side, which engages the two axle halves together.

you might have a malfunctioning cad and a properly operating switch and wire.
or you might have a malfunctioning switch or wire that's just shorting the pins.

start with the wiring.
