Default 46RE trans

I have a 1996 Ram 1500 I bought from my Son, It was having tranny issues, sticking in 1st till very high rpms, having to start out by manually putting it in 1st,mainly very hard upshifting,a shop told him his codes read,solonoid/sensor bad,So I installed a "Master Solonoid kit#22420AKP" from Cascade transmission parts,It drove perfect for 3-4 mi. then started slipping on acceleration, then finally stopped any forward or reverse movement. shift lever in any position it acts like neutral. also sometimes at idle it whines, sounds just like a power steering pump thjat's low on fluid.I read the owners manual and it said use Mopar atf plus or Mercon or Dextron III,I used Mercon III. Hopefullly your Gents can help me out.** Thanks, Mike

Don't know about 1996 model, but on 1999, 46RE requires ATF+4 only. Are you checking fluid in neutral or park? Not familiar with Master Solonoid kit#22420AKP.

welcome to DF.

it sounds like you are low on fluid. how much did you put in? it'll take about 5-6 quarts to fill it up, and as said, you have to check the fluid in neutral, not park.

next - i think you've got the wrong fluid in it. it should be mopar atf+3 (superseded by atf+4), not dexron.

I too have the "low PS fluid" sound on mine although the trans fluid is reading right in the zone while in Neutral on level ground. What did you find out?
