Default Rear axle identification

Hey guys, i was shopping for tie rods today in my 2wd v6 2001 ram & they asked which rear axle i have because it could mean lower priced parts if it is a dana. I thought it sounded a little off, so i am asking my favorite experts for clarification.

I may be missing something here, but what does the rear-end have to do with tie-rods?

OT: There should be a tag of some sort on the rear-end. Also, on some vehicles it is listed on the under-hood sticker.

I would think it was a plain ole Chrysler 9.25 Rear. And since your 2wd, unless you've made changes, you probably have an open diff and 3.55 gears.

And DK is right, rear end has nothing to do with tie rod's.

I know it sounds wierd to me too, but auto zone said there was a difference for that reason. Maybe i will just go to rock auto instead. They don't ask about my diff when shopping for tie rods. Maybe autozone will carry blinker fluid next.

Go to the FAQ/DIY section here. Download parts manual and get Dodge part number. Give that to them to cross reference. I bought tie rod ends last fall for mine at AZ, and they did not as stupid, non relevant questions. They just gave me the right parts. The only thing that matters is year, 1500, and 2wd. They do ask engine size, but that is on thier drop down at top righ corner of screen. It just helps do preliminary sort of database.
