what do you mean by to much for where you live? it is coated in oil that has absorbed dirt making the caked on grime. i found a leak coming from the seal around the oil plug and i think the oil filter is another source since most grime is right around it.

That year truck can easily be had for $3000 where I live. Prices vary based on where you are.

The oil could be anything. Pan gasket, oil filer seal. Neither is a really big issue to fix. Another source of oil all over - check valve cover bolts. Bet they are loose. This will allow to run all over back and down the side of the engine.

How do I check valve cover bolts? Usually I like to figure out on my own but not with 5000 riding on it.

Put a socket on 'em, and see if they are loose. Fairly standard for these trucks.

OK. See the blue things there? One on driver side, one on passenger side. (yours are probably black, but in my garage, if soomething is around very long, it tends to change colors).....

There are either eight or ten bolts around the bottom edge on each cover. I think the bolts are either 10 or 12mm. Tighten them to around 14 ft. pounds.

Also, if you go HERE, you can download factory service manual. You will need this....

AND....what part of the country are you in? And if yoiu go to UserCP at the top left of the page, click on "EDIUT SIGNATURE" and put your truck info there, we will all know and you won't have to enter it each time....
