Default Gears

I got a 01 sport with a 318 on 38s what would be a good gear ratio to be able to haul a 16 ft trailor with a jeep xj. Lookin to keep as good of fuel milage as possible but not struggle to pull the jeep.

5.13 gears if you have Dana 60 axles. If you still have the stock axles on 38" tires I would look into swapping them out for D60 axles.

4.56 is the lowest you can get right now for your 9.25 rear axle.

+1 on 5.13s with 38s.

I'm guessing because you have a 318 that you have a 1500? You are playing russian roulette with half ton axles on 38s.

Wildman, I thought you could get 4.88s for the 9.25 rear?

You have 38 in tires. With 4.56s you will STILL be at taller ratio than stock.

It's not 30 in tires with 4.56s........

Have to take tire size into account. It's not just gear ratio. 4.10s with 50 in tires you would never get the thing going.......

Your truck would still be a dog with those gears. Albeit a litter better one

There was 4.88 gears but they have stopped production of them.

He is 100% correct that you're pushing your luck with stock axles and 38" tires. Go to a junk yard and find some D60 axles for your truck and swap them out. Then when you're at it swap in 5.13 or 5.38 gears.

I know you were not looking to swap axles but if you want to keep your truck running right you need to swap axles.

4.56 would definitely feel better than the gears you have now (guessing you have stock gears?) but you are still way under geared and to buy 4.56 or the proper gear is the same price so why not get the proper gear right? 4.56 would not make it easier on gas because you are still not in the proper rpm range and it would suck for towing. 4.56 brings you back to stock mileage, power etc if you had 35s. 4.88s for 37s. Because you have 38s AND you are towing in a hilly area I would get 5.13s for D60 axle. Maybe even 5.38s. Don't fear the gear. The thing would be a BEAST and I would put money on your gas mileage being better than it is now and your transmission would thank you. I know it sucks to do an axle swap but trust me, it will pay off. Heck I broke an axle shaft with 35s and it was fluke. Now I'm upgrading to 38.5s and guess what, I'm doing an axle swap as well.
