Hard start/rough idle
Hey guys, after my truck has been sitting for a few hours i have to hold it over to get it started. It cranks and tries to start but just takes about 10 seconds to actually get running. If i have it off for only a half hour or so it starts right up... Also i have a rough idle. I changed the spark plugs, wires and cap but no help. My RPMS stay steady but it just kinda shakes while im idling. Any ideas? Its a 1997 5.9L w/ 120K

RE: Hard start/rough idle
I would get ahold of a fuel pressure gauge and check the fuel pressure. I would also assume you installed a new rotor when you put on the cap but if you didn't it couldnt hurt to do that. The fuel filter is in the tank on Dodges like our so its the same amount of labor the pull the pump as it is to change the fuel filter. Definently check your fuel pressure though, a couple of weeks ago I ran into a 94 Ram 250 Van with a 360 and the owner had the same complaint it turned out the pump wasn't pushing enough pressure. Pump was expensive though, over 200 dollars.

Since it has been a couple weeks I don't remember the specs on that 94. Yours may very well be different. I would just call your local Dodge dealer in the morning and the parts guy should be able to tell you how much pressure you should have. If you are more than 5-7 lbs low then its probably time for a fuel pump. If you haven't had one installed on your truck yet, with as many miles as it has its probably time anyway, 100-150k is about the lifespan of one.
