Default 4wd grinding

I have a 99 ram 1500 with manual 4wd. When i engage it and drive normal its fine but when i put pressure on it (such as pulling out another vehicle) it makes a grinding/missing noise in what sounds like to me the front axle. Im not sure if its not engaging all the way or if something more serious is wrong.

Check the CAD on front axle, as well as hub bearings. CAD info is in the FAQ/DIY section. THere is a thread there I believe. Gotta make sure it is completey disengaged.

+1, make sure the CAD is engaging all the way first. http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/repair/..._engagment.htm
