98 Dodge Ram 1500 AC not working
As I read this, all I can think is why has no one referred to the FSM. To begin with, you cannot (or at least I couldn't) getajust a clutch from the dealer, and FLAPS don't carry just the clutch either. And my clutch was bad - obvious form the smoke coming out of it!
You need to ohm out the clutch before assuming from somone's post here that the problem is the clutch. All we can do here is guess based on what you are able to tell us, and by your own admission, not experienced on AC. Having managed over 40 HVAC techs at one time, and having been licensed< i do have a little experience. And one can can overcharge a syystem, if it is not empty to start, if there is air in the system, etc.
Go to the serrvice manual and diagnos as indicated there.
Zman was correct - this can be dangerous as the gas is under high pressure.
I am NOT convinced it is the clutch as there is not enough information provided to reach such a diagnosis. There is no indication that the high or low pressure switches are good or bad, or that the orifice and filter may or may not be clogged, or that the compressor itself may be bad.
My suggestion is to go to the FSM, start through that process, and let us know as you go through it. Maybe based on that we can actually provide some answers based on logic and help reaqch a solution to get some cool air for ya!
Hate to be so blunt, but I would hate to read tomorrow that someone got injured because they may have received less than good info here on DF.
Bring it here and I'll help you get it fixed! Got no problem helping someone out!

If there is 12v at the clutch it proves that the PCM is processing the A/C request and both low and high pressure switches are closed. He already stated that he can turn the clutch by hand so we know the compressor is not locked up.
