Controls get power from the PCM, you either have a switch, or wiring problem. (maybe the dreaded clockspring.....)

I had the same problem, turned out to be my brake switch. It has two tangs on it that hold it in, one broke. The cruise circuit goes through it.

I am new to the forum, any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. I have a 1999, 2500 Ram with Cummins engine. My issue started years ago with a failure of the ABS system. The Dodge shop replaced on of the ABS sensors as they stated it was broken. It corrected the issue with the ABS failure. However, at that time the cruise control began to act very erratically. After accelerating up to highway speed, and hitting the CC button to set the speed, the truck begins to rapidly accelerate. The CC can be cancelled with the button or by hitting the brake. Or, I can spend the next 5 minutes trying to dial in the correct speed by hitting the decelerate button about 6 or seven times. The truck usually then slows to a speed well below what is desired. Hitting the accel button will again cause acceleration beyond what was originally selected. By hitting the decel and accel buttons many times, I can usually dial in the speed I want. The Dodge shop stated that the ABS sensor had nothing to do with the CC operation. Myself, I belief he was clueless. Does anyone have a clue where to begin here?

Default 1999 2500 Cummins Cruise Issue

It is 4x4. I have done research in the 1998-1999 service manual. It appears this system has a "smart" learning ability. Over a period of time, the CC will adjust itself. in this case, thinking the throttle cable has some slack in it. It can lead to overshoot and undershoot of target speeds. There is a method by which to cause the system to clear the history and supposedly function as new again. I will try this afternoon and let you guys know if successful.

Okay. The issue was resolved by clearing the cruise control buffer. It stores the last 10 or 15 uses for performance improvement and detection of a stretched accel cable. To clear, the truck needs to be at highway speed with accel pressed and cruise control on. Press the CC SET button and immediately press CANCEL. Wait 10 seconds and repeat. Do this 10 to 15 times. Mine continued to aggressively accel until about the 12th time. Then she worked like new. Hope this helps.

Wonder if resetting the PCM would accomplish the same thing?? It is what controls the cruise control after all.....

You are over my head on that one. I would need to do some additional studies.
