Plowing Thoughts
Hello Everyone,
I would like some input on plowing mods for my truck. I know plowing is hard on a truck regardless but like to be a bit proactive.
I am going to drop either a 827 lb. Western or a 795lb. Boss V-Blade Plow on my truck. I am going to use it at work, plowing approximately 5 acres along with a F-350 and a Chevy 2500.
1) Is anyone on the forum using a V-Blade on a 2500? If so, how does it handle the weight? I was thinking of adding Super Springs or Tuftruck coils to compensate for the added weight.
2) Any mod suggestions? I have a deeper trans pan, a trans temp guage and the truck came with the "RV or Plow" package.

I plow with mine. Although its only a 400lb Snowdogg POS. Yes, peice of ****.
Anyway, I havent done anything to the truck for it. I do know that Redneck_Ram has diesel springs in front.
As far as a V plow, I dont know first hand, but I did see a 1500 with a V blade for sale here local a few months ago.

Not only do you have to think about the weight on the front of the truck, but the added weight you need and have to have in the bed of the truck. Yours being a 2500 you have the Dana 60 so you don't have to worry about the wheel bearings like use 1500 guys, but you still have the same problem with keeping the poor made Trans cool.
I did install a Trans cooler on mine, but that being said I have a 1500 with a 7'5 HD Fisher MM1. I also did the Posi-Lok , but there again I have a 1500.

yep i have diesel springs up front. i have a 717# fisher 8' hd mm2 my trucks front end drops 3/4" when the plow is raised. i would suggest doing the same for your 2500. it will handle the plow A LOT better!
as for a ballast......i usually do not run one. however, i built a ballast box last winter in my spare time, because there wasnt much snow to play in. HERE is the thread about my ballast box. i used 12 4x8x16 solid concrete blocks, and they equal to ~450#'s
my truck has no problem handling the plow without the ballast, however, when i do have weight in the bed i can usually plow in 2wd. i have yet to replace any front end parts, aside from wheel bearings(they were the originals with 160k on them) and axle joints. neither caused by the plow, as i hadnt used it yet.
i would suggest not getting a v-plow if youve never plowed before. they have alot more functions, and if you dont know how to plow, you can screw up your plow, and/or your truck. i would suggest a fisher/western fora v-plow stay away from boss for the v-plow, or any plow for that matter. fisher/western are far superior to the boss, and are A LOT better designed.

edit: the only thing about my transmission, that is not stock, is a borg warner pressure solenoid, remote filter, and an aux. trans cooler. aside from that you really should get a trans temp gauge, and one of these.
a gauge and that fitting i linked to is going to be my next mod.
oh, and when your plowing, like towing.... keep your overdrive OFF. trust me on that one!

Crazzy, I looked into the Sonnax today with the trans shop we use here at work. They advised that it would not be necessary as long as I am not beating on the truck (beating meaning putting the truck in reverse before coming to a complete stop, slamming it in drive while in reverse, basic driving and plowing no no's).
Kejobe, at least the SnowDogg is light. : )
Red, I would just go with a straight blade (alot cheaper) but am clearing out 2 large parking areas with cars on both sides and it takes forever with a standard blade.
I have the Derale Deep pan on my trans which has the port for the trans temp guage. I have read good and bad about having the temp guage in the pan but the port made it an easy decision to put it there.

i put the trans cooler on when i installed my new transmission.
i wouldnt recommend putting the temp gauge in the pan. you want to know what the trans temps are before they hit the pan. thats why i linked you to the cooler line manifold, so you can put the temp gauge into the pressure line.
the remote filter is also another good idea, that way when you delete the check ball in the pressure line, you wont get much drain back.
i can understand the want for the v-blade.... ever considered the fisher xls?
i wouldnt go with anything after market for springs.... just throw some diesel coil springs on there. they will be stiffer, and will give you plenty of weight carrying capacity for the plow you desire.

You definietely upped the ante with the mention of the Fisher XLS.I watched the video on You Tube.I am going to do more research but like what I see so far. I am going to shoot from the hip here and say that Western, Fisher and Blizzard are all owned by the same company. I looked at all 3 of their websites and they are all the same with different plows.
