Default AC give up

The AC on my wife's work truck is acting funny. She said it quit blowing cold and she smelled something burning. When I looked at it, it would blow kinda cool then warm up. I do smell clutch and there is some dust around behind and other places. Is it possible there is nothing wrong with the compressor itself and I could get by replacing the clutch only? And should I be able to turn the compressor by hand?

Should be able to turn the compressor by hand. If it is binding, time for a new one. Check it when it's hot, and not working properly.

Hot is when I checked it. At 104 deg. today "My air quit" was the first words out of her mouth. So as long as I don't see evidence of oil spewing out of something, a clutch should fix it? I replaced everything on my T#hoe at the begining of summer but it was obvious with oil all over the compressor that something give out. I didn't notice how easily the compressor turned though. Thanks.

Finding the clutch alone will be the challenge. One on bay, but cannot remember what year it claims to fit.

Clutch and field coil are serviceable only by replacing compressor is the answer i got from the dealership and all parts stores. There are some field coils on ebay that were listed to works on several models of Sanden a/c compressors.

That's one I found. It's not the one I found last night. I also found a Mopar for $200. I don't have gauges. Maybe Oreilly's rents them. If it cost too much, a compressor is what it'll get. But then to cover the warranty, all the other stuff has to get replaced too. Can't win for loosing these past three weeks. Clutch, fuel pump, and now ac parts. Thanks yall.
The pressure would be low if the clutch isn't engaging, right?

You have the tools to replace the clutch? You can get the whole compressor for a little more than $200. (of course there is no freakin info about your truck) so I can't confirm how much for the compressor. Replace it , and take it to a shop, and with the money you save on buying crappy gauges, ( no evac pump) you'll be happy.

I'm sorry. It's a 98 w/5.9 gas burner. Use to have alot of tools. Decide to change careers and sold them all for a fraction of what I had in 'em. The compressor "kit" will run around $270 at NAPA. That's probably what it will get. The last three weeks have been a strain on the wallet. Clutch in my truck, fuel pump in my truck, and before I could get that fixed, AC on wife's truck. Who needs Christmas presents anyway. Thanks for the info yall.

I hear ya man, I'm going through the same financial BS. Then again who isnt ? I'd help you fix it, but I don't think you'll want to drive to NH.
