Default 231HD Transfer case tick..

My 98 Ram has a tick in the T-case only when engaged. In 2H there's no noise.. In 4H there is. Haven't tried 4L as I don't use it much. But any how. Can anyone tell me what it could be. I have heard the Drive chain gets stretched. If it is the chain how hard is it to do?

Checking the fluid in it couldn't hurt...

this t-case saver install instructions show you how to check the rear snap ring.

but - id guess the ticking to be a drive shaft u-joint.
first it ticks, then clicks. then clacks. then falls out.

Could be the Cardan joint on the front drive shaft.

Whatever it is I can feel in the shifter. I have just changed the fluid. and had the rear tail stock off and everything seemed fine.

I've checked U joints in the front also... I'm wondering if the chain spins in 2H along in 4 also. Does anyone know.

no. chain only turns in 4wd.

can you safely put the truck up on rear jack stands and run it and duplicate the sound.
