How to make my 46RE last as long as possible
I've registered today and done a lot of searching, and have found a bit here and a piece there about care of the Ram trannies, which have a bad rep.
So I'm asking how best to ensure I get the max life out of mine. I have no transmission issues right now, and the fluid/filter were changed 10,000 miles ago.
For example, I have one mechanic friend who swears by replacing the tranny fluid with synthetic 10W-30 motor oil. That kind of thing.
I haul light/medium trailers, the heaviest a 2500 lb axle 6x12 single axle utility trailer, and whenever I have any kind of load, even an empty trailer, I always switch off the OD. Very hilly country here, and with OD off there's far less gearing down on the hills.
Aside from regular tranny fluid/filter changes and using OD sparingly with loads, what can I do to keep her on the road as long as possible?
It's a '99 1500 4x4 with the 5.2 and 46RE. About 140K. I've done most of my own light/medium mechanic work for 30 years, but this is my first Dodge.
Please excuse me if this has been covered comprehensively in some other thread. Considering the rep of these Dodge trannies, I expect it's a pretty frequent topic, but if there's a checklist like what I'm looking for, I haven't found it in the FAQs or other threads.

dont tow with overdrive ever! get your self a drain plug b&m part number 80277. also get a remote filter kit dont have the b&m part # off hand right now, but you can find it on summit. get a large auxiliary cooler. and upgrade the gearing in your axles to 4.10's, or 4.56's.
welcome to df.
install a big transmission cooler and remove check valve.
service transmission annually or every 15,000 miles
never use any fluid or additive other than atf+4
cross your fingers and hope you don't find broken snap ring, band anchor, or chips in the pan.
as said, don't tow in OD, it doesn't cool properly.
