Error P1740 - New Trans?
Hi Guys, I just bought 2001 QC Ram with a 5.9 and Off Road package. Anyway; about 2 week ago my CEL came on and then a few miles later i lost my overdrive (O/D OFF light came ON). I pulled into Auto Zone to borrow their code reader and came back out to my truck and my overdrive was back to normal (O/D OFF light was OFF), so I assumed the truck had a brainfart and wiped the codes. Well, last week it happened again and I brought it back to the dealership as I have a 30 day 50/50 warranty. They called and told me I could either pay for a new Torque Converter or a new transmission. They said the torque converter is keeping the transmission from shifting to OD? Can someone explain if I'm getting bent over or not. I figured I would have to pay for a new OD solenoid, not a new TC or trans?
Thanks everyone
Thanks everyone
When the O/D off light comes on without hitting the button the trans is going into safe mode. That means it is overheating. There is a clog somewhere in the trans lines, cooler or the check valve not allowing fluid to flow. There is a chance that it has already burned up. I would try flushing it out, drop the pan, change the filter, clean out the valve body, and change the od and gov pressure regulators and sensors. Then fill it back up and add an external oil cooler. Make sure to do the check valve delete and then clean out the cooler lines in the radiator with brake cleaner. Just keep spraying it in there until it comes out clean. Not too hard to do. Search the DIY threads for the check valve delete and the gov. and od solenoid/transducer and regulator.
That's what I originally thought and hoped for

I'll be picking the truck up tonight as I don't have the money to replace the transmission (my part is $700)
I'll try the check valve delete and change the fluid, filters, and clean the valve body and cooler lines. I've never done half these things so I'll need to google instructions and stuff.
Thanks guys
ALSO, have the dealer put the transmission into "learn" mode with their OBDII tool. If the tranny was rebuilt and the TCC/TCOC was removed, it WILL set a DTC.
